safer space

Rise is dedicated to providing a harassment-free space for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity + expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, language, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic standing, or otherwise.

Rise does not tolerate harassment of users in any form.

Anyone who violates this safer space policy may be sanctioned, expelled, or banned.

This safer space policy applies to all Rise sponsored events and programs, including online comments, local markets, live streams, Discord channels, and any space organized by Rise online or off. The goal of safer spaces is to encourage all participants to work together to prevent or reduce harm, particularly for those who are often the targets of violence and harassment. Oppressive behavior that makes others feel unsafe will not be tolerated.

Such behaviors includes, but are not limited to:

  • Offensive, derogatory, threatening, aggressive, or silencing comments (related to gender, gender identity + expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, language, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic standing or otherwise)
  • Violence, intimidation, stalking, or unwanted following of a person
  • Persistent, abusive, and non-constructive criticism with regard to any project(s) any participant may show during an event, space, or program
  • Persistent micro-aggressions in the form of comments, jokes, material, or otherwise
  • Harassing photography or recording
  • Disruption of events, programs, or proceedings
  • Inappropriate physical contact or communication without consent
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Sexually demeaning imagery
  • Advocating or encouraging any of the above behavior

Some of Rise's events and programs may have additional rules in place, which will be made available to participants or users. Participants are responsible for knowing and abiding by these rules of our Safer Space Policy.

Reporting

If you are being harassed by a member of the Rise or the community, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact us at safety@sideview.media. If the person who is harassing you is on the team, they will recuse themselves from handling your incident. We will respond as promptly as we can.

This code of conduct applies to Rise spaces, but if you are being harassed by a member of Rise outside our spaces, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by Rise members seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The abuse team reserves the right to exclude people from Rise events based on their past behavior, including behavior outside community spaces and behavior towards people who are not in the community.

In order to protect volunteers from abuse and burnout, we reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

You can contact or report unsafe actions by:

If need be, we will contact law enforcement and assist you in any possible way. Any in-person or virtual conversations will be held in confidence. Any reports will be handled privately and will be acted upon with your safety in mind first. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we've received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of Rise members or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

Anonymous reports, unfortunately, cannot be followed up with you directly. However, we will fully investigate and take seriously all anonymous reports. We want you to be happy and safe at Rise spaces. In no way, should you ever feel bad or guilty for reporting an incident. These policies exist for you and for fostering an inclusive space which everyone can enjoy.

Enforcement

If a person engages in harassing behavior, they will be asked to stop and are expected to comply immediately. If the person continues to engage in harassing behavior we will take action to make sure the spaces (online & physical) continue to be welcoming for everyone. This can include warning the offender or expulsion, temporary or permanent, from Rise spaces, events, and/or programs.

In the case of expulsion from a paid event (physical or virtual), no refund will be awarded.
